Homemade baking soda slime, for a Wednesday afternoon
School glue, baking soda, contact lens solution. Ten minutes to make, and an hour of peace.
Most slime recipes going around call for borax, not something you would happily put in a child's hands. This one contains none: baking soda, combined with contact lens solution, is what makes the texture set.
What you need
- 200 ml of liquid school glue, clear or white
- 1 tablespoon of baking soda
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of contact lens solution
- A few drops of food colouring, optional
- Glitter, optional
The method
Pour the glue into a mixing bowl.
Add the baking soda and stir until it has completely dissolved.
Add the food colouring and glitter if you are using them.
Stir in the contact lens solution one spoonful at a time. The mixture pulls away from the sides of the bowl and thickens.
Knead by hand for two or three minutes: it goes from sticky to stretchy.
If it is still sticky
Add the contact lens solution drop by drop, never more than a teaspoon at a time. Too much solution makes the slime brittle, and there is no going back.
Safety and storage
Only with an adult watching, and not for children who still put everything in their mouths. Kept in an airtight container, the slime lasts about a week.
